DS Automobiles history
Futuristic elegance, pure line, technological perfection ... From its first appearance at the Paris Motor Show in 1955, the hearts of visitors beat in unison as they discovered the DS 19. An eternal passion was born.
1938: An engineer by trade, close to the Michelin family and CEO of Citroën, Mr Pierre Boulanger starts the project VGD (voiture à grande diffusion). This imaginative and visionary spirit gave life to the DS project, initiating it just before the Second World War.
1932 to 1964: A talented italian stylist, sculptor and painter, Mr Flaminio Bertoni gaves the DS its avant-garde allure with modern and elegant curves. This French-style touch of luxury was a nod from an Italian perspective. An aeronautical engineer by trade. Focusing on ligntness, aerodynamics and the centering of weight, he worked on the innovations that would make the DS 19 so far ahead of its time.
1955: The DS was unveiled to the public on 6 October 1955 at the Paris Motor Show in the Grand Palais. It has "obviously fallen from the sky," said the philosopher Roland Barthes. The 1950s marked the beginning of an adventure crowned with success. The technological advances and avant-garde styling of the DS outpaced all its competitors, raising the bar on excellence. This bold move quickly became a key characteristic of the company.
1959: To win over a highly demanding public, the DS was fitted with a separate driver's compartment. Equipped with ultra-modern options, including an intercom, car radio and telephone, the DS became the car of choice for world leaders.
1966: First in the category Cars from 1,300 to 2,000 cm3 and French cars, seventh overall in the Rallye de Monte-Carlo in 1956, the DS 19 is needed from its first participation. A whole series of victories will follow. 1959, first place overall and winner of the Manufacturers' Cup. 1966, the DS, in version 21 wins the big title. It is the apotheosis.
1969: Launch of the new design of the dashboard (a large visor surmounting three round dials) and a major mechanical innovation: the electronic engine injection. The DS 21 exceeds 185 km / h.
1970: From the DS 20 and DS 21 to the DS 23, each new version further improved powertrain performance and standard-fit innovation. The 1970s saw the DS come to full maturity. It shifted up a notch with the arrival of a 5-speed gearbox.
2014: Officially created on June 1, 2014, DS becomes a brand and affirms its ambition: to embody in the automobile the French savoir-faire of luxury. The French car brand DS is based on an exceptional heritage, that of the DS 19 born just 60 years ago. This legendary car carries the values of innovation, excellence and avant-garde.
2015: The brand celebrates 60 years of the original DS and reveals, at the Geneva Motor Show, its signature 'DS AUTOMOBILES, SPIRIT OF AVANT-GARDE', its new logo, and the new DS 5 with its iconic grille DS Wings. Heir to the Citroën DS of 1955, the DS of today marry remarkable style and technology, comfort and dynamism, noble materials and refinement.
2018: Just one month after its launch, DS 3 Crossback has already won its first prize: the SUV was voted the "best series car" at the 2018 Paris Motor Show by the Grand Prix Auto Plus - RTL - Turbo.
2019: Fully committed to the energy transition, DS Automobiles initiated the New Energy Summit. On the occasion of the curtain-raiser of the Geneva International Motor Show, DS Automobiles opens the controls for DS 3 Crossback E-Tense and DS 7 Corssback E-Tense 4x4.
